Moving Checklist

MOVING CHECKLIST

Moving into your new Penticton can very very exciting, but it can also be a stressful experience as there is so much to do, and so many things to remember. But don’t get too flustered; whether you are taking on the move yourself, have friends or family helping you, or hiring a professional moving company, here is a quick checklist to help you.

Plan the move ahead of time; of you haven’t already hired a moving company, do some research online or ask around. Most moving companies will even come in and do an estimate.

TIP: Weekends or long weekends are usually the busiest, so if you’re able to move during the week, you could potentially get a discounted rate!

  • Get rid of things you no longer need or use – You can either have a garage sale, or donate the items to a local charity. Why pay to move these items when you no longer need them?
  • Pick up all of the supplies you’ll need, such as boxes, tape, bubble wrap, newspapers, etc. Also make notes of what items may need special care.
  • Obtain change of address cards to contact anyone who send you mail regularly.
  • If you’re moving out of the area, make sure to obtain all medical and dental records for anyone in the family.
  • Arrange for your children’s school documentation/records to be sent to the new school
  • Make any necessary travel plans or reservations.
  • Use up all food and supplies you don’t want to move with you.
  • Throw away all hazardous good.
  • Start packing, and begin with items you never use on a regular basis.
Always make sure to clearly label all of your boxes to make unpacking a breeze.
  • As you are packing, make notes of any items that may be expensive (ie. TV’s, steroeos, computers, etc) as you may need to declare these items if they are lost or damaged in the move.
  • Change any important information online.
  • Go online or your local post office to change your address to the new address.
  • Contact the following places to notify them of the address change: banks, phone and internet provider, insurance companies, utility companies, doctor, dentist, vet offices, investment companies, etc.
  • If you haven’t done so already, confirm the reservation with the moving company.
  • If you subscribe to a newspaper, transfer or cancel the subscription.
  • Finish the remainder of the packing.
  • If you are driving a long distance, have your vehicle(s) serviced.
  • Close charge accounts.
  • If you are not able to transport your pets yourself, arrange for shipment.
  • Arrange utility service disconnects (disconnect after moving day and connect prior to or on delivery day).
  • Reconfirm the arrival time with the movers. Make sure they know the exact Penticton address and have your cell number in case they get lost.
  • If you are moving yourself, start dismantling furniture.
  • Set aside smaller items you can fit in your car.
  • Make note or take a photo of your utility meter readings, at both homes.
  • Be present when the truck is being loaded and unloaded, in case the Penticton movers have questions.
  • Before the movers leave the property, check your belongings. Make notes if there are any damages to your items.
